For most of human history, getting somewhere meant building a model of the place in your head: which way the sun moved, where the hills sat relative to where you were going, roughly which way the river ran. That model was maintained constantly, because the cost of losing it was getting lost.
A blue dot replaced all of it. You still arrive — arguably faster — but the model stopped being built, because nothing depends on it any more.
In 2017, Amir-Homayoun Javadi and colleagues at UCL published a study in Nature Communications that put people in a scanner while they navigated a simulation of London's Soho. When participants worked out routes themselves, the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex were active, spiking at junctions where the number of options changed. When they simply followed instructions, that activity largely disappeared.
The finding is not that GPS causes damage. It is narrower and more useful than that: when you are told where to turn, the part of your brain that maps space does not engage. It is not being harmed. It is being skipped.
This is not a matter of opinion. In 2015, Brunyé, Burte, Houck and Taylor published a study in PLoS ONE that simply asked people, standing at ten real outdoor locations, to point north. The answers did not cluster around north at all. They clustered parallel or perpendicular to whichever road was nearest.
The paper's title is the finding: “The Map in Our Head Is Not Oriented North”. Their conclusion was that cognitive maps get organised around whatever the local environment offers — a street grid, usually — rather than around the compass. Earlier studies that found north-oriented mental maps had, they argued, simply been run in places where the streets happened to line up with north.
So if you have ever been quietly embarrassed about not knowing which way north is, the honest answer is that almost nobody does, and the street you are standing on is actively feeding you a wrong answer.
Mary Hegarty, a cognitive psychologist at UC Santa Barbara's Spatial Thinking Lab, told NPR in 2024 what the problem is: with GPS running, “you're not paying attention to the broader environment that gives you cues” about where you are. Her advice is to let go of the fear of getting lost, be observant, and practise keeping a sense of direction in your head as you travel.
Hugo Spiers, a cognitive neuroscientist at UCL, names the thing you are building: a cognitive map, “an idea of where things are and how they're connected.” His suggestion is to deliberately commit street names, landmarks and routes to memory, using narratives and tricks to lock them in.
Both amount to the same instruction. Pay attention, guess, and check.
Skills that atrophy from disuse come back with use. That is the whole mechanism. The uncomfortable part is that the return needs the same thing the loss needed — repetition — and there is no daily reason to practise navigation any more, because the blue dot is still there and still better than you.
