Getting turned around in a familiar place usually means you are navigating egocentrically — storing routes as sequences of turns relative to your own body rather than as positions on a map. Almost everyone does both, in a mix. The people who never seem to get lost are simply running the allocentric one most of the time, usually without being able to explain it.
Familiarity lets you get away with pure egocentric navigation for years. You know the sequence of turns cold, so you never need a map in your head at all. Then you leave a shop by a different door, or the bus drops you a street early, and the sequence has no entry point. Nothing about the neighbourhood helps, because you never encoded the neighbourhood — you encoded a route through it.
People describe this almost identically: my mind works like the arrow on Google Maps, always assuming forward is north. That is a precise description of egocentric encoding, and it is a very common way to be.
There is also a measurable bias working against you. In a 2015 PLoS ONE study, Brunyé, Burte, Houck and Taylor asked people to point north at ten outdoor locations.
